In fact, I would give it a good cleaning.  Open it up, vacuum out all the
dust bunnies, take out each card and clean the contacts, then seat them back
carefully.

Fred Langa has a good write up about giving a good cleaning.  Published in
LangaList, I believe.

Then, it may start to work again, just fine.  Or if you put in another hard
drive, at least the interior is cleaner.
