Betty, My Laserjet is about 10 years old(!) so no USB support. It runs warm enough to heat up my office so I leave it off when not in use. But at least a dozen times I've hit the "print" button on my work computer and sent the output to the wrong printer. I just want to assign a default printer and not have Windows "help" me out by second guessing what I really want to do. Thanks, -Mike

They're both networked via printer sharing software. He has the same "problem" with his default printer. Both printers can "sleep" but my husband turns his off anyway. When the default printer isn't turned on, the system will go to the other printer on the network as the new default. Sometimes it remains the same when the second printer is turned on after the first. However if both printers are turned on when the system boots, the default doesn't change. Does your HP LaserJet have USB or Ethernet, or is it too old? One of the older HP LaserJets I used had parallel, serial and ethernet. I always used the serial port when not using the network. Its faster than parallel--snails are faster than parallel. Might also be a quirk in using something as ancient as parallel with XP. Does the LaserJet have a sleep mode? Mine didn't, but it was a 1990 era printer.
