Thanks for the advice.  This is an Intel Mac,
so I followed the instructions from the PMU reset Knowledge Base article and unfortunately it didn't make a difference.
It's not a big deal unless this is indicative of a deeper problem.

1st try resetting power management. Method varies greatly between models
so you have to look it up. Search on MacBook Pro abd SMU or PMU.

I've found that my MacBook Pro is forgetting where on the desktop I
left my main hard disk and which wireless network I was connected
to.  Time and date remain accurate, but I guess it's possible that
the computer is getting that when I connect to the internet.
It's a little over a year old.  Is there a battery or a cap that
