Actually this is common behavior, and also sad in a very frightening way. To be distracted by various visual and audible devices while driving no longer appears to be an issue of concern for most motorists. Automakers even offer such devices as either standard or optional equipment. Computers with keyboards that slide out of the dash are becoming an increasingly popular option. People attach radios and GPS units to their windshields without any thought at all to the attendant loss of a clear and unobstructed view through the windshield. Indeed, almost all such devices mounted in that manner are illegal almost everywhere in the United States.
