It's not that we want to control what people write, after they're in
the group. We want to control who gets in to the group. So we need to
approve or deny, so we need the request to go to Pending.

Moderating members lasts until the moderator changes the status of
the member to unmoderated. A moderator can change the status as
soon as the membership appears, or leave it in place for as long as
they want.
I've never had any known problems with pending messages or
memberships showing up. If I did, I'd probably set the list the
same way you have. As long as it works the way it's supposed to, I
think it's easier to weed out spammers from the git-go.
