Mainly need my Dell printer for the faxing, copying (its a 4 in 1), as have
13 year old HP, b&w printer that still works fine for printing, until
cartridge starts to wear out, as it's beginning to now.
Actually, that raises a question I hadn't considered before - since, from
past experience, I'm guessing its going to run maybe $85 bucks by now to
replace the laser cartridge, might I be better off putting that money
towards another new or even used laser printer, maybe even a color one -
assuming I can scrounge up the extra bucks to do so, like borrowing them?

Randall, Welcome to the crowd. I tried and tried to warn people about
buying
any printer that did not take cartridges from Staples or any other
office
supply place. I wrote about this a few years ago and a couple of
people said that Dell printers were great and I resisted the "I told
you so" but..
That might be one reason that Dell was giving away their laser
printers to Non-Profits in MD and I cautioned them to refuse
them. Most listened and are happy, some of the others are paying the
price. No competition in the cartridge arena for them.
I've been buying refurbed Dell low-end laser printers (1710n model) for a
while now, with 3-year warranties, for under $200. I used to purchase HP
LJ
1000/1200 printers (which had only 1 year warranties) for the same task,
but
they just died after about a year or 2 of light use. The Dell toner is
competitive on a cost basis with HP brand and not all 3rd party toners are
created equal for HP printers. Xerox seem OK, but I stopped buying the
Eco
Elites after the last one fell apart, yet again. I have to eat the ~$70
cost every time one of those cartridges break.
The bonus is that the Dells are networked, while the 1000/1200 series is
not. Some of these replaced expensive ink-jets in certain instances.
Even
though they are just rebranded Lexmarks, no problems with the Dells. I
have
about 8 of them in use right now.
