That is sad. Have you run Disk Utility on it? Have you followed Apple's technote on the "5 R's" (Reset, Retry, Restart, Reinstall, Restore)? It is after all a computer. I have be using my iPod almost every day since I got it in 2001. I have dropped it a few times. I replaced the battery once.
