I upgraded a Windows ME to XP Home.

Windows ME is widely regarded as the "exploding Pinto"
version of Windows.

It definitely was worse than 98SE. If by "upgrade" you mean
anything other than a complete wipe and reinstall, then I'm not
surprised there are problems.

Now I always go through this windows trying to update a file and it never here is installed. So, next time it tries again...and again...
How come?

I'd like the specific error messages.

Otherwise don't bother, save your data and do a fresh install of
XP Home (which isn't bad).
