I hadn't seen Stewart's suggestion before. It sounds nice. However, I
bought a multi card reader for $25-45 (can't remember for sure) and
will take cards from any cameras I might be using in the future. I
only needed this because the Samsung I was trying to hook up wasn't
being recognized by the Mac. First time I've ever run across that.
She should be able to plug her camera directly into her computer and
have it recognize the card. But that's a guess, I've never owned a
digital Canon.
As to the second question, I'd hold off. I think what you're talking
about is called Time Machine. I upgraded to OS-10.5 and have had
nothing but problems using that feature. I've even tried trouble
shooting directly with Apple. Still no luck. It works for about 2 days
then crashes the machine. I've seen, after searching the Apple help
site blogs, this is a problem others are also having and Apple is
trying to address. So far, the latest update and Apple's help line
haven't quite figured it out yet. Best to wait. Some other manual
update procedures or software might be better. Or have her go to
Tiger, not Leopard. I heard in an email today it's now being called
Leoptard. While I believe the Mac OS to be better then any Windows OS,
it still isn't always perfect. After all, we all are only human. I've
heard the Leopard compared to Vista, a couple of small steps forward
with several big mistakes.

I have decided to give my college-age daughter a Canon point-and-

My question is: does the Macbook Pro have a built-in SD or SDHC
flash card reader? This is what the Canon camera uses. Looking at
the Canon USA web site, it says that
Canon is conducting compatibility tests for the current versions of
Canon digital imaging software with the shipping versions of Mac OS
X 10.4 [Tiger]. Results will be posted soon. For now, Canon is not
claiming compatibility with Mac OS X 10.4
So, should I buy also a USB card reader for the camera?
Second question:
She got the Macbook Pro last September. Would getting an external
USB or IEEE 1394 hard drive be beneficial for backup (i.e., would
the Mac OS automatically back up like I've heard when an external
hard drive is connected? (There is a name for this, but I can't
think of it.)
