I agree with your comment on being bulkier. However, one thing I've
found is "bulkier" isn't always a bad thing. I bought a 5 pack of
flash drives from Costco for around $30 about a year ago. I can now
only find one. God only knows where the other 4 have gone. They were
to damn small to keep track of. Maybe the cat ate them?
I also agree with your software idea. But also however, I had to buy
the card reader for a camera (Samsung) that used SD cards, but the Mac
wouldn't recognize the camera when I used the USB cord. It would
recognize the card when I used the card reader, and later when I used
the card reader in the multi-function printer with card reader. The
Mac just refused to recognize the camera. And Samsung's software
driver download site was no help. No software drivers for Macs! This
was probably one of those weird and far in-between situations.

Jeff'f suggestion of a multi-format adapter will let her take pictures

cameras. But it is bulkier.
The simple/easy solution is to use the USB cable that comes with the
camera and Apple's wonderful iPhoto software. If Canon adheres to
the PTP
(Picture Transfer Protocol) camera card standard (ISO 15740) there
should
be no issue of compatability. I would not buy a camera that did not
support PTP, EXIF, etc.
