You won't be making good decisions if you base them on anti-Apple
propaganda. While FileMaker Inc is owned by Apple, it is run
independently of Apple's needs. FileMaker is perfectly cross platform.
When I develop FileMaker databases I usually do the work using the
Windows version because FileMaker seems to pay slightly more attention to
the Windows version and I like the keyboard shortcuts better.

FileMaker is not only powerful, but also very easy to work with.
Development is amazingly fast because otherwise complicated stuff is
cleverly built in and simply happens without much effort. FileMaker is
easy to learn and there are loads of good books. Start with the Visual
Quick Start Guide from Peachpit Press. In fact, get that first and give
it a quick read to see how much better FileMaker is.

The latest version of FileMaker is particularly impressive. If you want
to use a SQL database FileMaker will actually run as a front end for it.

FileMaker also has a built-in web server. So it is easy to put your
application on line. If you application grows you can switch it over to
FileMaker server, which can handle 100s of users. (NASA uses it for
tracking Space Shuttle engineering.)
