Fred, thanks for mentioning Belarc. I've heard about it but haven't looked into it.

Tom and Mike, yes, I was looking for something that does for Macs what Secunia does for PCs (as well as looking to see if there were other products/services for PCs to compare to Secunia). Here's the reformatted output from an online Secunia run with thorough inspection enabled that I just did, such as it is, and it does look at a number of third party apps. The system is a newish laptop with Vista Home Premium with not too much on it.

It's been a while since I tested Shavlik. I know it was very thorough with MS software but can't recall if it looked at non-MS apps. The online Secunia scan provides links for apps that need updates, and in my experience it's been updated within a day of patch/update releases. I haven't tried the downloadable version.

Note about the online scan from the website: "The Secunia Software Inspector will inspect your operating system and software for insecure versions and missing security updates." I don't know if it checks for updates not related to security - for further study, maybe. In any case, it's been useful to me. Usual disclaimers apply.

Thanks.

-Andy
