Even though your Mac doesn't recognize it, have you tried running "Disk Utility" to see if it recognizes it? I have had Disk Utility recognize volumes that would not mount and then it was able to reformat them.

A client gave me a Western Digital Passport external drive to copy file to.  It's 
formatted for Windows, & the files are on my laptop Mac.  I can't get the Mac 
to recognize the drive, much less re-format it for a Mac.  I can re-format on the 
PC, but still can't get the Mac to recognize it.  tia.
