Brian,

Even though you've deleted the printer, it still exists in the registry
as a printer port. There's 2 things you can do:

Use the Printers and Faxes Applet (or Printers and Other Hardware -
depending if you're using the Category or Classic View)
1. Start the Add Printer Wizard.
2. When prompted for "Local or Network Printer" choose "Local Printer
attached to this computer *but* make sure "Automatically detect and
install my Plug and Play printer" is *unchecked*.
3. At the "Select a Printer Port", click the down arrow on the
selection box and select the IP addressof the printer -
(IP_192.168.0.10)
4. Click next
5. XP will go look for the printer at that IP Address. Assuming it
finds it, it'll show you the information about the printer and the next
screen (IIRC) will prompt you for the printer manufacturer and driver.

- OR - you can:

Hack the registry. If you (or anyone) wants more information on this,
email me - either on list or privately. I started to write up
instructions on it, but I've got about a full screen's worth of caveats
and info if you've never been into the registry before - and I'm just
starting to get to the steps you actually would need to do, (all of
about 10 mouse clicks). And I sort of need to get back to work... :-)

Oh... If anyone wants to flame me for suggesting modifying the registry,
let me add this: The registry is a really neat thing but if you make a
mistake while hacking it (or even just perusing it), you can seriously
mess up your system. I understand the risks and am willing to take them
(and have for several years without a problem).

Larry

Subject: [CGUYS] Home print server problem

Here's a problem that I hope somebody can help me with: I have a D-Link
DP-301U print server installed on my home network that allows me to
print
from both wired and wireless PCse around the house and it's working
fine.
My saga however is that I picked up a refurbished Dell with XP home
(yes
legal) and I installed the printer on this new machine as I've done
before
with the other PCs in the house but for some reason could not print from
this one machine. So rather than try to figure it out I removed the
printer
and went through the process of adding a printer a second time. This is
where I ran into the problem.
The printer is added as a TCP/IP port with the port name being
IP_192.168.0.10 i.e. XP adds "IP_" to the servers ip address on my
network
automatically. Ever since adding and removing the printer I get a
message "A
port with that name already exists. Chose another port name" error even
though I have no printers defined yet on this PC.
How can I get this machine to forget the port and allow me to add the
printer again, or am I doomed to changing the ip address for the server
and
reinstalling a printer on the other PCs in the house. Long winded I
know,
but I wanted to make sure I presented all the details.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Brian
