Bleed through and " muffled " sound are really two different phenomena. Bleed thru may actually be print thru of audio from the adjacent layer of tape or it can be a result of mis-alignment of the playback machine particularly on 1/4 track tape formats where the adjacent track is audio recorded in the opposite direction. Muffled sound in the sense that there is substantial high frequency loss is usually attributable to worn tape heads or tape heads the are out of true azimuth adjustment or simply out of azimuth agreement with the tape machine that the tapes were recorded on. In either case the issues are mechanical and need to be addressed on the tape machine and are unrelated to your sound card or anything to do with your computer audio chain.

All of this is entirely separate from the problems of baking tapes to render them playable again. ;-)

Subject: Audio question i.e. Converting reel-to-reel CD, separating muffled tracks

I am going to be converting some old reel-to-reel to CD and, some of them have 'bled' through so, the tracks sound garbled. While the ones' that don't have this problem will be easy to do, will I essentially have the same problem, as if I made a copy of a cassette tape to another cassette tape.

I have Creative Lab's SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS soundcard.
