From the MS link I included earlier:
* By design, Internet Explorer imposes a time-out limit for the
server to return data. The time-out limit is five minutes for
versions 4.0 and 4.01 and is 60 minutes for versions 5.x and 6.
Also, the time-out limit is 30 seconds for Windows Internet
Explorer 7. As a result, Internet Explorer does not wait endlessly
for the server to come back with data when the server has a problem.

When I used IE 6, it was found in the browser settings.
I can get many pages but some don't get pulled back all the time so I can view
'em.
I didn't have this problem in IE 6.
On a related note, I had 56k modems both times and the same ISP. The only
differences were...i had win98 and IE 6. I connected almost twice as fast with
the old versions- 40-44k versus 26-28k
