Have to move this up to Level 2. Maybe the rest of the list has some suggestions.

Some questions to ask yourself are what is the recent history of the computer. Any symptoms, problems, slowdowns, installations, or upgrades that you know about? The only other possible solutions I know of are:

   * Last known good configuration
   * System repair
   * Clean install

Good luck.

No error codes, and the thing freezes up before letting me open Task
Manager.

I would start by looking at Windows Task Manager while in a normal startup mode and see if anything is using too much CPU power. Also, are you getting any error codes when it freezes?

Every time I start the computer (Dell running XP), the computer
freezes as
soon as any activity begins (even opening a folder). Then, I have to
restart manually and begin again. I restored to the settings of a few
days
ago, which didn't help. I'm in safe mode now, and everything seems to
be
okay (disc is working, etc.).

Is there something besides the disc I should check when in safe mode?
