Here's a few things you can try...

First.... don't panic.  :-)

Second, don't use the system restore just yet... it's possible to get
things resolved without going down that route...

Boot to "Last Known Good Configuration".  If that works, you're done.  

If that fails, then boot into "Safe Mode" (either with or without
network support) and see how the system acts.

If it works okay, then we know it's either a program being loaded in the
registry, at startup or a service.

Every time I start the computer (Dell running XP), the computer freezes

ago, which didn't help.  I'm in safe mode now, and everything seems to

okay (disc is working, etc.).

Is there something besides the disc I should check when in safe mode?
