>I don't know any compelling technical reason >why a OS9 not UI could be implemented on top of BSD >(even on top of *nix, X-Windows based technology).
There are multiple problems. Grafting a GUI on top of a CLI is a stupid thing to do (as proved long ago by early versions of Windows). GUI logic does not map well into CLI logic. >Listening to you OSX critiques, I could never quite figure >out if Apple was having trouble trying to merge to two different >UI's, or if the BSD (Darwin/Gnome?) UI sucked all by itself, or if Apple >has just lost focus on the UI. All of the above. OS X is a nightmare when it comes to file names. Apple's attempts to paper over BSD's problems with a lot of complex code results in a situation where file naming rules are enforced inconsistently and inconsistent behavior results in data loss. This is especially galling because OS 9 was especially good about this. Many problems are of Apple's own invention. For example the illogical operation of the Sidebar leads many to do things that cost them their files. Same for the ability to see the same file in multiple windows simultaneously. This deceives the observer to conclude that multiple copies exist with bad results when the "duplicate" is deleted. Again, contrasting this with OS 9 where one could safely tell the user "If it makes sense on the screen, it makes sense inside the computer."
