Tom, I don't think you are entirely correct here. The
iPod has three distinct UI's on the hardware side (classic,
shuffle and touch) and all are doing well. The other side
of the UI, iTunes, has evolved considerably as well.
Their common feature throughout all their iterations is that
Apple makes it very easy to get the music you want onto
your iPod and to play it back (within the limitations of the
device, i.e., no screen for the shuffle) in exactly the way
you want it, and to otherwise keep out of the way as much
as possible.

Also, building quality into the product is only one point of
Deming's teachings, and you could argue that Apple had
that in mind when they started with the OS (BSD) that is
widely believed to have had the most stable, widely tested,
thoroughly reviewed code available at the time.

One of Deming's other teachings is to improve constantly,
and I think Apple has done that. Another of Deming's other points
is Leadership, not Supervision, and I could argue that Apple
has done the former while Microsoft has done the latter.

I have my gripes with OS X (I miss Location Manager, for
example), but it doesn't suck, IMO.

Okay. He doesn't completely agree with me. He knows Windows sucks, but
mistakenly thinks he can apply band aids to make it better. I guess he
either did not read or did not understand Demming. Demming teaches that quality is not something you lard on afterwards, you have to build it in
from the start.

A great example is Apple's OS X. OS X sucks because it is based on BSD
Unix, which sucks. After eight years of trying to paper over the problems OS X still sucks. OS 9, while now outdated, was much better because they got the critical user interface things right the first time. This weekend
I got my wife to upgrade from 9 to X and having to explain the OS X UI
absurdities was maddening.

iPod was so great because Apple got the UI right from the beginning.

iPhone I don't know. If it is based on OS X it may very well suck too.
