In the compact digital point and shoot models ... which is not what you seem to be looking for but is all I have experience with ... I suggest the Sony line. They have Zeiss lenses, are cheaper than other name brands, most still include a viewfinder, they have more lens zoom capability (4 or 5) and their menu systems are more user friendly than most.

In the pro models, I hear that Canon is the brand most respected.
