I agree with everything that you have pointed out. I searched out
the issue and discovered that prior to Leopard, Macs had limited
ability to read anything other than the plain vanilla UDF formatted
discs. Windows Vista provides for writing the various levels of UDF,
but prior to Vista, Windows machines were limited in how they could
handle UDF discs as were Macs.
UDF is clearly not the way to go for compatibility, and yes, I'll
tell the person who sent me those discs exactly that. I do have
Leopard on my portable Mac, and I'll view those discs on that
machine. The Mac I was initially trying to read them on runs Tiger,
thus my problem in viewing anything other than plain vanilla UDF
discs, which these are apparently not.
FWIW, my very recent standalone DVD player identifies these discs
as video CDs, but will not read the data on them.
