> I look at all kinds of places with Google maps almost daily. The problems I've had lately are with all areas of this country and others, at literally any zoom level in satellite mode. In other words, even zoomed out to a view of the whole country, it may give me a "zoom level not available" message. > I dug into the Google maps help blog a little and tried some of the things they suggest to no avail. They admit that they are having some problems with satellite mode and say they are working on it. > It's working better this morning. Slow to load, but no "zoom level not available' problems.

> Thanks for the links. I love looking at maps. I'll be going up to Maine in a couple weeks to camp at Hermit Island and visit relatives, so that's one of the places I'm looking lately.

There are a lot of places where the zoom is just not available for the closest level. So it may be partly due to that. I've had some luck with Google Earth instead of maps.google.com. Since last year, Google has added a lot more satellite photos at close-in zoom levels, but needs to tweak the database. Have you looked at the photos that are linked to Google maps? Here's Phippsburg, Maine with uploaded photos. You can add your own when you get home. http://snipurl.com/34l57 hermit island, maine - Google Maps [maps_google_com]

I like maps so much that I have several atlases, hundreds of local, state, regional, international maps, road maps, soil maps, natural history maps, history maps and even Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary, http://www.merriam-webster.com/cgi-bin/book.pl?geog.htm&9.

No, I don't have a GPS. Don't need one. I have a compass, lots of maps, and two cell phones, and I usually don't care if I get lost. That's simply another adventure. Enjoy yourself in Maine, and don't forget the Cutter bug spray! Get lost, too--it's fun.
