Huh? Which battery? His CMOS battery? He said 'surge protector', not UPS, but most UPS's have a switch on the front, and turning them off won't affect their batteries either.
I admit I'm too lazy to chase after my UPS, I just use the front panel computer switch, knowing the unit sucks power even when it's off.
