In all it's vagueness...

I think Tom was implying that the CMOS battery will
no longer trickle charge if you interrupt power at the
source rather than at the mobo level.  There's normally
maintenance power (don't know the exact term) present
even when the softstart is off.

That's why it's a softstart, of course.

Switch the softstart off, pull off the case, and you'll
frequently see a little green LED still going on the mobo.

Unplug or switch off the mains power and it goes out.

Now you're runnig on battery only--maybe that means
shorter batter life, maybe not.  It's your CMOS.

Those batteries last a long time.

It's relatively trivial to replace a switch and/or power
supply, depending on whether the box is worth the effort.
