Sound Designer is a discontinued product, but the file format lives on. SD2F is part of Apple's CoreAudio API so it may be considered part of the Mac OS. Of course, Apple will someday decide to drop it. CoreAudio is based on the cross-platform OpenAL library (LGPL), but its maintainer has changed several times in recent years.
