This is an assumption. Windows is *often* installed on the c drive, and if it is, then the desktop is *probably* on the c drive. But if e.g. any removable drives were in the system when Windows was installed, then it would install itself to a later drive letter. I have a system now where the desktop (and Windows) is on the E: drive.
