In my area, Comcast uses Motorola devices. In our case, you can determine
the specific model by looking on the underside of the DVR. The general rule
is that "Hollywood" doesn't want you to be able to make digital copies of
their content. So you can not "copy" files from the DVR but must play them
(in real time) to an external recorder. Further, you need to be certain that
you have compatible outputs from the DVR to the inputs of your recorder. In
some cases, the DVR will have a coax out but not always and Comcast might
disable some I/O ports in your local area to be "Hollywood" compliant. Your
best bet is to experiment.

In my case, I have a Moto 3412 which has a coax out that I run to a Pioneer
DVDR. The cableco box feeds the TV through component (HD) connectors. When
the d**n cableco box doesn't misbehave, I can make the scheduled recordings
to it and then play back to the DVDR so for archiving.

Note also that Comcast generally will NOT let you remove the cable
connection from the box and still have it work. For example, you cannot take
your cableco box to a vacation home to view stored content. Fun ain't it?

YMMV
