Red herring! The problem with the robots is that they have legs. Balance
turns out to be a very difficult mechanical and computational problem.

Cars have wheels. Wheeled locomotion has already been figured out. Nobody
is seeking to give cars legs.

They have actually been quite successful. These are military vehicles
being designed for off-road and otherwise hostile environments. Not the
same as operating on roadways.

According to Wikipedia, there is already as 12 km segment of Interstate
with HOV lanes set up for automation and a lane for autonomous vehicles
is being added to Interstate 805 (expected completion in 2010). Is that a
"pipe dream?"
