Since you mention the Mac...

The Mac offers extensive meta tagging capabilities and an API for working 
with tags. To make tags truly effective we also need applications 
developers to get with the program and they have. For example, when I 
install Linotype FontExplorer X it adds dozens of new meta tags. I can 
use them for Spotlight searches to, for example find all the PostScript 
fonts or all the fonts from a particular foundary.
