This is a continuation thread of a problem that started two or three months ago.

What has gone before: Daughter took PC to college; sometime thereafter optical drive failed to work. Drive does not appear in My Computer. Device Manager says driver is corrupt or missing. Does not seem to be a device driver for the optical drive on the web, only a firmware update. Bought new optical drive, computer would not recognize it. Now have been removing all programs installed since daughter went to college, no improvement. Virus scan, registry scan, etc. all performed.

Now decide to reformat primary hard disk and reinstall OS. Question: how? Optical drive doesn't work. A gamble to reformat hard disk, hoping optical drive will start working after reformatting. What to do?

On other thing, maybe unimportant: At each bootup, OS checks Drive D for errors. (Internal physical drive is partitioned to Drive C: for programs, and D: for data.) No problem ever found using chkdsk on either drive C: or drive D:
