Low end would be how much you want to pay for it. It's like saying aren't cars low end cars?
For basic home use most off the shelf stuff is just fine. If you want more options you can do things like flashing some routers ROMS with linux based programs that allow you a lot more variables. Then there are small business solutions like sonicwall...and for serious home users.
