Don't give up hope. I live in the country and our house is over a
quarter of a mile off the road. For a long time I thought that I could
only get dial-up, then we were finally able to get DSL. Lately my wife
has been talking to the local cable provider (Time-Warner) and they said
that they might be willing to run cable back to us. If they are will,
they could easily become both our phone company and our ISP.

I am looking at a place to move to out in the country. No cable or
DSL is available at the location I am interested in. However,
Comcast is running cable into all the new developments in and around
the area. They just won't provide feeds to many of the older, more
established residences.
If you happen to live right on a main road you can likely get
cable. If you live down any of the side roads that intersect with the
main road, you are SOL for cable, unless you live in a new development
wherein houses are clustered tightly together and the residents live
a__hole to elbow together.
It's all about the money.
