I am running Ubuntu at the moment. I have been able to run WMP files in the past on Ubuntu, however now I get the "suitable codec" dialog with a search button which, when you click it, gives you another dialog which says you would need to install the gstreamer plug in which is illegal in the US. A bit of a sticky wicket.
However, it also says there is a plug-in to use with Firefox, they give this URL: http://port25.technet.com/pages/windows-media-player-firefox-plugin-download.aspx So strictly speaking, they aren't saying IE is required, they are just suggesting you could save yourself a hassle by using it in preference to some other browser. I don't recall seeing a mention of this link in previous posts. Perhaps it was just added today.
