Without glasses you get 2-D: left-right and up-down.

With glasses you may get 3-D: left-right, up-down, and forward-backward.

Why do 3-D glasses not work for some people? Probably some degree of 
color blindness to the colors used to split the image. Have you tried 3-D 
goggles? They do not depend on color filters. They feed a different 
picture into each eye (just like headphones do for ears).

Why can eyes do 3-D and ears only 2-D? Interesting question. Probably 
because ears do not swivel in their sockets like eyes do. Yet one more 
advantage the Martians have over us.
