I tried doing that and had to hard start the machine after it froze. It now seems to be working fine however. I think the updates needed a couple of restarts. Running Time Machine just incase. Used to run it all the time, but with my old computer it was to taxing on the system.

I just installed the new MS updates to my Office suite. I also just
installed 4 updates from Apple. I have a program that runs called
SMARTreporter. It's supposed to monitor the hard drives and tell me
when they may be failing. After installing all these updates it's now
reporting my drive may be failing.

Did you update your SMARTreporter to the letest version?

Double check the problem via Disk Utility. It will give you SMART status
at the bottom of its window.
