Kind of reminds me of Uncle Sam.

A number of soldiers were injured or suffered some type of trauma to cause their release from service. In some cases these soldiers had been paid bonuses baseed on continued duty within the military.

However because they were dismissed early or retired, they are being asked to pay back parts of the bonuses.

Similar circumstances in which they got overpaid for travel or similar stories.

This was stopped a little while ago, but you can imagine the hurt and the sore feelings it caused these soldiers.

It seems the bigger you are the easier it is to act like an ass.

Or this tender little morsel from the Wash. Post:

"The silver linings in this economic cloud have been few, seemingly
non-existent. Instead, they've been replaced by news that at times may
seem almost Kafkaesque.

For instance: Software giant Microsoft laid off 1,400 workers last
month. Yesterday, the company acknowledged that -- oops! -- it actually
overpaid severance to some of those workers. The unemployed workers
found this out recently in a letter from Microsoft, which was sitting
on cash reserves of $8.5 billion last month and is demanding repayment
of the extra severance within 14 days. "
