One ray of hope appears to be that MP3 has changed the music
delivery model.  MP3s aren't the only things that can be downloaded
for a fee, just the most convenient.  It's not yet widespread, but
much higher resolutions than RBCD are possible and to some
extent available.  This should become more common.

Whether people will want it is an open question.  You have to be
a stone gadget freak or a true music lover to spend the money
and time on this pursuit that it deserves (my opinion).
