One ray of hope appears to be that MP3 has changed the music delivery model. MP3s aren't the only things that can be downloaded for a fee, just the most convenient. It's not yet widespread, but much higher resolutions than RBCD are possible and to some extent available. This should become more common.
Whether people will want it is an open question.
