You are correct. FC demands .mov files. Unfortunately, .mov rarely
seems to work right on PCs, where you'd want .mpg or .avi.

Uh, no. The .mov files can be the output, not the input for FCP.

.mov files are simply MPEG4 files in a wrapper, similar to .avi. I have no problem with them in Windows, either.

The best basic format for Final Cut pro is .dv, which is the uncompressed format directly from videocams [good ones, at least]. The files are huge, but that makes them better for high quality output.
