The way to sort this out is to simplify to the max, test, and fix. Then 
only when successful add the next complication and test/fix that.

Step 1 is to connect your MacBook using a network cable to whereever your 
MacMini is plugged in the the Internet. Test for general internet access. 
Once you have that, test the email. The acid test is sending an email to 
yourself. If that arrives you can move on to something more complicated.

Getting email working can be tricky because there are multiple settings 
that you have to get exactly right. Some ISPs use non-standard ports to 
avoid spammers. There are different schemes used for authentication. I 
just spent 2 hours on the phone helping a client only to discover that 
they were using the wrong password.
