Instead of connecting through another Mac or a PC, you should be
connecting to the Internet directly through the wireless access
point/router/modem, unless you have dialup. Your firewall settings are
done there and not in the other computer.
Do you have broadband access? Can you log in to your wireless router
[what brand/model?]? Do you know how to open ports or change firewall
settings? For POP email, incoming port is 110, outgoing is 25, 465 or
587 depending on provider; IMAP port is 143. Can you get email on your
Mini? It's easier to open ports in Tiger than Leopard, but if there's a
router, change settings there.
At home, I connect my MacBook to the internet through Mac mini
internet sharing with no problem except: I cannot connect email (Mail
or Thunderbird). It is apparently blocked by the firewall on the mini
for if I shut down the firewall, the connection works fine. There
must be an adjustment I can make in the firewall settings to allow
email through, but what is it (or is there something else)?
Both machines run Mac OS10.4.11 Tiger.
FWIW: On a recent visit with my daughter, I successfully connected to
and through her Windows et al home wireless system with no changes in
MacBook settings.
