What exactly is the connection between storing files in places
unknown or invisible to the user and technological advances?

This can be a problem for folks who can't let go of old ideas.
Picasa is
managing your photographs and you don't really need to know where
it is
keeping your pictures. iPhoto works this way too.
If innovation is to be more than an advertising slogan you need to be
willing to accept improvements when they present themselves.
