What you may be describing is standard "bbcode" which replaces some character combinations with graphics on some web forums.
She's probably got html email turned off, so she doesn't see the graphics you send via email. Or, you've got yours set to only send plain text email (a wise decision in the Old Days). Do you really have smileys in your character map? What font?
