Tom said it well.
Nowadays, you can incorporate (locally) for between $ 250 and $ 500 on the low
end and $ 1000 and $ 10000 on the high end. The difference- is the agent you
employ. Is there really a difference between an entity that does it for $ 250
and one that does it for $ 10K- perhaps.
We have been doing incorporations in about 10 states for decades. We know what
we provide and we proffer. I have seen equivalence at other entities as well
as incompetence (or, perhaps, lassitude). It's YOUR job to find the right
advisor.
There are a few places where you need more help- those places where you have no
nexus- so you need the services of a registered agent. And, how much of a
nexus you expect in the incorporated state (Nevada and Delaware are two that
come to mind).
Please note further that you may need to multiply register (as a foreign
corporation). Not know what you want, where you want, and how you want renders
advice proffers useless.
Just note the structure you choose AND the states in which you you choose to
operate have tremendous consequences.
Make the right choice and you can save. Make the wrong choice and you will be
paying far more than the most expensive practitioner currently charges.
Caveat emptor.

Subject: Re: [CGUYS] OT: how to incorporate yourself quickly?

I hired a local attorney who did it for $200. He filled in a form on
his computer screen and it spit out the papers. He filed with DC. He
gave me a stock certificate. He gave me a 10 minute lecture on the
things I had to do every year to keep the incorporation valid. He told
me I needed a registered agent in DC because I was not a DC resident
and pointed me to a company that did that for a small fee. Doing it
myself would have taken many hours and I would always have to worry
that I missed something important. All in all it was $200 well spent.
Today he probably charges more like $500 for the service, but still
worth it.
