Banks, Social Security and probably others have some sort of inside track to deaths. They didn't shut down the joint accounts--just online access to them...until I appeared in person with proof of identity and a death certificate. I still had to give them passwords, which they insisted I change on the spot, before they turned the online access back on.
SS and pension required a death certificate to be faxed before they would even talk to me on the phone.
