That's pretty vague. What problem exactly? Is there some update the app needs that you don't have? e.g. I can understand maybe needing a certain version of the .net framework.
So why, if the problem involves McAfee and Windows Update, did you ask about updates to Internet Explorer? There's certainly nothing wrong with updating to IE8 _before_ installing McAfee. Are you getting some specific error from the installer? Is this a fresh install or is/was there old security software installed? What OS?
