Well, any decent zip utility will store the attributes of the files it zips, 
and restore them on extract, so they really should remain read-only. I would 
think that even Windows's built-in zip support
does this (I don't use it, so I don't know for sure). 

So, I still don't understand, but I guess maybe I didn't read the initial 
problem correctly.
