When I was working on my dissertation my policy was to keep a copy in at least 3 different states. That was before the days of the web so I was just mailing photocopies. Today keeping valuables dispersed is so much easier.
If you are using one of the bigger services you will find that they also disperse data geographically. In fact the ones that stress security don't even keep all of your data in one place. So it takes multiple break ins to get all your stuff.
