I found a very quick app called Everything that indexes just the filenames of your HD's. Search results are *instant* as you type...sometimes I think it's so fast it comes up before I type it. This tool does not search contents of files, just looks at filenames, leaves almost zero memory footprint and a very small database. Windows only.
