You won't lose your prior mail unless you totally uninstall and delete Windows Live Mail. I played with Live Mail for about 10 minutes so my experience is limited but two years ago there were extensions for Thunderbird to import mail from Windows Live mail. I really don't know how well or poorly the importation worked, but there are likely lots of folks having to deal with that issue one way or another.
